Cadge, assistant professor of sociology at Bowdoin College, presents a carefully considered ethnography examining "how Buddhism arrived in the United States and is... adapting" to its new context. Specifically, she focuses on Theravada Buddhism, the branch practiced in such Southeast Asian countries as Thailand and Sri Lanka. She begins with an overview of the history of Theravada Buddhism and its establishment in the U.S. by both Asian immigrants and—separately—American-born converts who had studied in Asia. She spends the bulk of the book focusing on Wat Phila, a Thai temple near Philadelphia founded and attended by native Thais, and the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center (CIMC), founded and attended primarily by white Americans. Drawing on extensive field work, Cadge compares and contrasts gender roles in each center, how each center creates identity as a community and how, despite common roots, each defines the "heartwood," or core of being Buddhist, differently. (Wat Phila consciously emphasizes the centrality of ritual, while CIMC consciously de-emphasizes it.) Although Cadge's descriptions of Wat Phila's and CIMC's practices and people are often detailed and her theses are clearly articulated, her approach is academic (the project began as her doctoral dissertation). When my kids were little we had all the Wee Sing cassette tapes for in our car and also to play in the house. When I discovered that they are still for sale and on cd, I had to get them so that my granddaughter could also share in the sweet little songs like her parent did. What I always loved about Wee Sing, is that the songs are sung by kids. I would recommend ALL of the Wee Sing music. Parents need to let their kids listen to innocent kids music and not all the stuff that "they" listen to. Too many young kids are having their innocence taken away because parents don't want to give up "their" music and movies. I love the innocence of the these classic children's songs.

I like this CD for the kids as an introductory tool to bible songs. The only problem that I have is that most of the songs only play for 30-40seconds. :( which leaves me to have to complete the song with the kids without music. Other than that it is a great CD.

Good price. Had this as a child & Love that itâ€™s still around for my kids. Has short choruses & songs that teach things like the books of the Bible. Also many popular Christian kids songs. The book includes melody line with chords which is useful for having for church programs etc.

I grew up listening to wee sing tapes and now my kids listen to the cds. Theyâ€™re great for learning a Sunday School songs. After a few months of listening to it in the car the kids could sing along. They ask for one of the wee sing cds every time we drive anywhere !

It is very hard to find Children songs that remain untouched from today's indoctrination away from true biblical teaching. These songs were truly a blessing.

I have used this product for about 25 years ! (in audiocassette version) I am happy to have the CD version...great songs !

I have 3 girls under 4 years old and they absolutely love Wee Sing!I enjoyed the accompanying book with music notes and words so that I could learn all the songs accurately.It was a great spring board for talking about the Bible and introducing stories for even the littlest listeners.My 3 year old daughter has wanted to get books out of the library on Biblical heroes and heroines because of Wee See.The songs are catchy and cute, some have motions and all are easy enough for kids to grasp and remember and don't grate parents ears like other "kids sing" mixes.I would recommed to anyone with children ages 7 and under.

My grandchildren love these songs! They make them so happy and a great teaching tool as well. I even learned all the books of he Bible with the catchy song!

The dead give away is Batman's emblem, the yellow background with bat on top that Grant Morrison made the trademark for old DCU Batman Inc. It is Batman/Bruce Wayne scouting Batwoman/Kate Kane to figure out if the identity matches and if she is worthy to be one of Gotham's protectors. Almost a precursor to Greg Rucka's written and J. H. Williams drawn Batwoman: Elegy. A fanatic read and highly recommended before going into this story.Issues 1-5 is the Hydrology arc and the intro of Batwoman into the new 52, but it picks up right where the above mentioned "Elegy" storyline finished. New readers do not fear, as all needed information is given. This is still a relatively new franchise. Kate is still at ends with her father and the tragedy that befell her sister. But a crimefighter has little time to rest in Gotham City as a watery ghost called "The Weeping Woman" is drowning children and leaving the authorities clueless. Kate also has her over eager yet not psychology ready cousin, Bette Kane, a.k.a. Flamebird, itching to go as her sidekick. Kate also has romance woes with Detective Maggie Sawyer of the G.C.P.D. And has gotten the interest of a supernatural division of the D.E.O. from an Agent Chase and Director Bones (it's a fitting name).Let me talk about the art first as it's just too exciting. J. H. Williams III works magic on the page. His stylish and intricate layouts. His gorgeous styles. He draws a more mundane Kate Kane and then a vampiric Batwoman that haunts the criminals she engages. Also, a lot of credit to one of the best colorists in the business, Dave Stewart. Batwoman's reds are burning, her blacks deep as night, and the whiteness of her face is the palest of pales. Amy Reeder, who does the Kate sequences in issue 0 is pretty good. But when Williams is the featured artist, everyone else sharing the page looks inferior.The story is gripping and intense. It gets away from the main focus of "The Weeping Woman" a bit too often as it juggles multiple plot threads, but this is not a frustration as each thread is entertaining and deserving of it's given time. Kate Kane lives her life. It's one of the appeals of this character. She is not too wrapped up in "the mission" to sacrifice her personal life but when she is Batwoman she is all business. She also is still relatively new to this, so there are those learning bumps that would be fatal for a lesser vigilante, but due to her military background and who she is and what she has dealt with she manages to overcome. You love to root or her.I have no idea how much of the writing Williams does but it is a relief that a top tier illustrator knows their strength is in the art and willingly accepts the aid of a career writer. W. Haden Blackman is there to keep him honest and to tell a coherent story. That ideal was finally realized on "Batman: The Dark Knight", but sadly is still not accepted over at "Detective Comics". (I love Tony Daniels' art but the man cannot write!)One of the main appeals of this series is although it's a Bat title, Batwoman operates on her own. Yes, she was inspired by Batman and realizes it's his turf but in this series they do not team up and she does not take orders from him. She wears his sign out of respect, respects the local P.D., does not kill, and has meets to chat but is not one of his agents. I loved the fact that when Scott Snyder was revving up to do the Night of the Owls crossover and asked all the other titles creative teams to join, Williams and Blackman said, "Thanks, but no thanks. We have our own side of Gotham to explore". That trickles down into this character as well.Great story. Great character. GREAT ART. Great series. Cannot wait to soldier on to the next volume.

I guess I'm doing a disservice to J.H. Williams III's writing and W. Haden Blackman's writing, but I've this urge to rush thru the plotline summary so that I can proceed to obsess over what's really got me stoked about this series. And, uh oh, here's the Batman with an offer she... can't... refuse?While the writing is, of course, invaluable, comic books is still predominantly a visually-oriented medium. I don't know how long these following folks have actually been in the four color biz, but, to me, they're a relatively fresh-faced crop of superstar artists whose work I'm now trying to track down. Folks like Fiona Staples, Sara Pichelli, and Phil Noto (who I think has been around for a bit now). But as good as them other folks are (and they're very, very good), J.H. Williams III steals all thunder. No other current artist gets me more psyched than Williams III. He's today's Jim Steranko. I love the explosion of creativy and flow that he brings, and the sheer dynamism. He enchances mood and atmosphere thru the application of innovative panel compositions. I dig how he gets all Will Eisnery in how he incorporates elements such as chapter titles into the visual narrative. J.H. Williams III and static storytelling are, like, mortal enemies. I'm a big fan of the guy. And so are you.

The first Volume of Batwoman has a number of things going for it. First, the artwork, done by the great J.H. Williams III, the artist behind Promethea and Sandman Overture. Williams makes great use of full page splash panels, framing motifs, and merging the background into the foreground to create a visually stunning comic. The plotting is also very well done, merging the criminal and mystical elements of the DC universe to create something both fun and frightening.The characters are where this becomes a mixed bag. Kate Kane and the rest of her squad are fine characters, but a few elements of her backstory felt very rushed if you're like me and didn't know much about the character prior to reading. The dialogue didn't help, which lost the snap I've come to expect from comics.

When I heard Greg Rucka didn't write Batwoman after the initial volume (the fantastic Batwoman: Elegy), I was incredibly disappointed. I assumed that someone else would take over and transform the character into a typical comic book cheesecake.But J.H. Williams (artist for Elegy) as done a great job in Rucka's absence. Granted, I'm seeing the typical creep of tropes surrounding female comics characters (e.g., convenient excuses for the characters to be undressing on the page), but it's not too bad and certainly not enough to ruin the book.Williams' layouts continue to be very avant garde, and while they're nice to look at, they aren't always ideal for readability.All in all, a very good book and a character I'm anxiously looking forward to following if the series can maintain this level of quality.

This is a wonderful book with great ideas to make with broken china and old/ugly tile that needs refurbishing. However, I have found that there are a few difficulties with this book. The author refers to PVA glue which cannot be found at local hardware stores and doesn't use a manufacturer's product name (come to find out this is actually close to Elmer's white or yellow glue). Also, there appears to be an error on pages 32 and 33 - please look at them as the instructions repeat themselves and there is no Day Two instructions so you can't finish the project- which is one of the projects I had planned on doing. As much as I love her ideas, I'm having a difficult time finding the products she uses and the suppliers list in the back were not helpful and some were no longer attainable on the internet. Someone needs to contact the author and ask her for clarification on the products that she used (especially for the fountain project).

Ordered this map with high hopes and was disappointed when I recieved it. The roads & important areas are printed in very light pink ink and on the beautiful green background, are actually difficult to read unless you are VERY close to the map. The paper is a bit thin, so if wanting this map, I would advise buying the laminated version. The map I received had 2 little tears at the top right hand corner (suposed to be new) and when I tried to roll it back up to put into the tube, I now know how the tears happened - paper very hard to roll back up without damaging. It seemed to be the best of what Amazon offered and included the details I was wanting -state parks, etc, but perhaps it is not the best map available. Returning & ordering a different map on a different site and getting the laminated one this time!

This is one detailed and very well made map which won't tear as a result of the use of tear resistant material (seems like a combination of paper and plastic). Lots of dirt roads, scenic highways and since it's a huge, two-sided map, the kms/inch ratio is high (1"=25 Km or 15.5 miles), so no squinting is necessary. I'm planning to take it on a road trip to Morocco in a few months and it has been a great trip planning tool. Will also be fun to hang it on the wall when I return, since I know it's gonna return fully intact.

I was on a group trip that involved overland travel throughout Morocco. This map helped me follow where we were going. I also was able to better guess which side of the bus to sit on to keep the sun off me. If I was driving myself, I would have wanted a map that was intended for a road map, with city maps of the major ones.

The video they provided was super helpful. This was my first liquid screen and it was pretty easy. Spraying your fingers was a good trick. Got it good the first time, too bad I did it before turning on the phone cuz I got a lemon Pixel 3! I'll try again when I get my replacement

This is a handy and durable traveling companion. The writing is clearly legible and the map itself fits comfortably in the side pocket of my camera bag. It was great for me to mark all of the locations that I visited with a pen and then use my scribblings for reference when I wrote about my travels later. I also did not have to worry if it rained as the paper is waterproof and tear resistant. Who needs an expensive GPS device that can be stolen when you can have one of these? Long live real maps!!

This is a great map for anyone who plans on doing their own driving while in Morocco. First, it is plasticized, so it doesn't tear, and it folds up again easily. It is very accurate. It has the great feature of indicating points of interest and tourist sights in an easy to understand format. Such a good map that I will plan on purchasing it for any future travels where we intend to do,our own driving.

Excellent map used on Morocco road trip. Used in conjunction with Garmin GPS and Google Maps. Needed all three. Nice that this map includes scenic routes and gas stations. Nat Geo products are excellent.

I don't know why I decided to buy this book. I never particularly liked Geithner or his policies, and I've already read several good books about the financial meltdown of 2007-2008. However, I did end up picking it up and reading it, and I'm glad I did.To my surprise, Geithner comes across as very likable. Of course, likability is not a critical characteristic for a great Treasury Secretary. However, it's a necessary and maybe even a critical characteristic if you're going to read a 500-page book by a Treasury Secretary; had I found him obnoxious, I doubt I would have finished this (and you can see my review of "Duty" by Robert Gates for proof of that). Geithner comes across as extremely intelligent but not at all a "peacock," to use one of his words. He readily admits that he screwed up in many ways, and he makes no bones about his failings. At the same time, he takes us through the panics (his own and that of the economy) and his approach to his responsibilities, and he seems to be, well, human.The book is also not even remotely snarky. He is candid in expressing his views of a number of other key players in dealing with the meltdown, and he's not always complimentary. However, his views are policy-based rather than personal, and he doesn't shy away from giving credit where credit is due to people he's not fond of from a policy point of view.I also learned a lot about the financial crisis that I didn't learn from the other books I've read. Much of that new knowledge is the "inside story" that Geithner tells, of course, but it's an interesting and important story, and I found him more or less persuasive.My comment about the sausage-making is the only negative. In order to tell the inside story he feels he must tell (and I can't really blame him for wanting to tell it), he gives lots and lots of detail about various financial institutions' failures and rescues and many details of how the policies (i.e., the sausage) was made. IMHO, these lengthy discussions could have been edited a bit more judiciously, and doing so would have made the book more readable (not that it's unreadable - it's just long and rather too detailed). However, while I've deducted one star to reflect this view, I believe this is a worthy book and, in fact, a worthy man.

This book is user friendly, well written and well thought out. It shows that Obama chose his Secretary of the Treasury very wisely. The detail is amazing, but not in the least boring. It reads like a novel. Geithner was the exact right man for the job, already skilled and savvy in the knowledge of how to go about rescuing nations from economic crisis. This is well worth the read and impressive. Geithner emerges as a very likable and admirable human being, who just happened to be in the right time and place to save us from Depression 2.0.

The Great Recession and financial panic of 2007-2009 has a lot of myths and stories surrounding it concerning what the government did or didn't do, what it should've done and shouldn't have done, and the motives of those working behind the scenes. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner is one of those lighting rod figures from the crisis who, because of his relative anonymity prior to the crisis, is often misunderstood or caricatured. In this book, Sec. Geithner not only dispels the myths about his own background, but also provides a unique insight and perspective on the panic from one of the only two people in high government who was there from beginning to end (Fed chairman Ben Bernanke being the other one). But his story, and his experiences with financial panics, doesn't start in 2007, but rather starts with his upbringing in a family that was involved in international development and finances from when he was very young, always moving from one country to another and spending very little time in America. From there, it moves on to his time as a civil servant in the Treasury department's international wing, dealing with the crises brought on the by the Asian financial panics of the 1990s and eventual rising to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the international branch. From those times Mr. Geithner picks up a lot of invaluable experience in financial panics, what makes them better, and what makes them worse. From there he makes the surprising leap to head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the most powerful of the regional Federal Reserve Boards in the country. And that is where the main story begins as Mr. Geithner describes the events that led to the panic, the actions he took as FRBNY chair and then Treasury Secretary, why they took them, and why they were necessary even if they were both unpopular and counterintuitive. The book reaches its climax with the stress tests backed by promises of capital injections for those banks the tests deemed were in need of them. Once the results of the test are released in the spring of 2009 a certain measure of calm enters the markets and the last chapters feel like a denouement as he deals with the Eurozone crisis and the toxic politics of Washington following the ascendancy of the Tea Party in 2010. What is surprising is how in the first half of the book Mr. Geithner seems to undersell himself, not out of a sense of humility, but because he genuinely seemed to believe that there were other people better or more knowledgeable than him. From my perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that Pres. Obama tapped him to be Treasury Secretary, even if he was a terrible salesman (a flaw that he readily, even jokingly, admits to being). What is also great about this book is how much value it has beyond being another account of the financial crisis. He does a great job of explaining why the unpopular decisions the Fed, the FDIC, and the Treasury took were necessary to save the economy, even if he falls into the trap of using too much of the jargon of Wall St. to explain it. I believe this book has value not only as an account of this financial crisis, but as a guide to how to handle future financial, indeed any, crisis in the future. As Mr. Geithner is fond of saying, a plan beats no plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the true story behind the financial crisis and the Great Recession of 2007-2009.

Overall I really liked this book. While Tim Geithner is not an writer and his style is definitely not of a thriller, the portrait of the crisis from his view definitely contributes to the overall understanding of the financial crisis of 2008.This book should not be taken as "stand-alone" but read in the context of all the other ones out there about the crisis itself. It helps one to form their opinions in a clear and more fair way in my opinion.Finally, this book also help show that the work of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and other institutions that prevented the crisis relied on countless individuals who never get recognized for their hard work and countless hours helping make this country better.
