About the Author

Matthew L. Miller is director of science communications for The Nature Conservancy, the world’s largest conservation organization. He is editor and lead writer the popular Cool Green Science blog and is one of the most prolific writers in the organization’s 65-year history. He has traveled across North America and to five continents to cover stories on science, nature and outdoor recreation. He’s worked for the Conservancy for 17 years, previously serving as communications director for the Idaho program. Matt received a degree in English – Creative Writing from Penn State, where he also worked as a publicity writer early in his career. As a freelance writer, he’s written about the outdoors for Sports Afield, Bugle, Quality Whitetails, Backcountry Journal, Living Bird and many other publications. He’s an active member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, and has received numerous awards including Outstanding Board Member and several awards for blogging. He’s an avid angler, hunter, naturalist and distance runner, and lives in Boise with his wife and young son.

About the Author

Joichi "Joi" Ito has been recognized for his work as an activist, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and advocate of emergent democracy, privacy, and Internet freedom. As director of the MIT Media Lab, he is currently exploring how radical new approaches to science and technology can transform society in substantial and positive ways. Ito has served as both board chair and CEO of Creative Commons, and sits on the boards of Sony Corporation, Knight Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The New York Times Company, and The Mozilla Foundation. Ito's honors include TIME magazine's "Cyber-Elite" listing in 1997 (at age 31) and selection as one of the "Global Leaders for Tomorrow" by the World Economic Forum (2001). In 2008, BusinessWeek named him one of the "25 Most Influential People on the Web." In 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oxford Internet Institute. The points highlighted in this book are all good points, but they are rather easy-to-understand ideas that can be adequately articulated in a blog article. If you are familiar with this type of concepts, there is not a lot of depth here. The key points are: embrace uncertainty, collaborative over individual efforts, adaptability over rigidity, etc.

I had an excited expectation for reading this book. Was rather let down.The authors do a good job of organizing their book, and providing reasonable examples. However, their examples are 95% from the MIT media lab which makes it annoyingly narcissistic, not that diverse, bias, and somewhat rote. It also brings to your mind the fact that they didnâ€™t do as much ubiquitous research as you wouldâ€™ve hoped.A lot of the thoughts they bring to the forefront, at least for me, were either â€œduhâ€ or â€œyou canâ€™t generalize like that.â€ Some of their stories and examples strongly supported their argument, while some dragged on and went on tangents and were somewhat weak and not that relatable.I definitely learned some things from this book, and appreciated the cautiousness and optimism they bring to the table for future growth and progress. However I think there are better books out there then this one, and you could use your time more wisely.

I found it this book interesting but I think it is written in a confused way, or maybe it was just too difficult for a deep understanding in my case. This is a focused and refreshing read from a dual authorship that respects each other. In the leadership mentoring I've the privilege of doing with emerging leaders from around the globe, this is added to my list of "must read." The nine chapters contain ideas we all need to absorb and live out. It felt like I almost had a "mini course" on leadership from these esteemed leaders from MIT...most welcome. This is a bit of a fast read...but do not read it fast...I did one chapter a day, focusing on using the material in my conversations and whole-person mentoring. Well worth the read.

Citing examples from events of this decade and contrasting organizational approaches that are succeeding now with failing ones from Industrial Revolution practices, Joi paints the future in complex brush strokes that identify both the fading institutional dinosaurs that hold us back and the promising thousands of frogs that are rising to take their place. A difficult read, but well worth the effort.

While some ideas and anecdotes are interesting, the book seems a bit rambling and poorly edited. It is also not clear the extent of Joi's contribution other than his PS entries.

I was disappointed in this book.I found Chapter 1 and 2 useful ("Getting Started" and "Everyday Designs").However, as someone wanting to learn the basic steps of flower arranging, I found the other 6 chapters irrelevant. These chapters, touching on how to make corsages, sympathy and funeral flowers, wedding bouquets, working with festive balloons, creating merchandise displays, and packaging for flower shops, seem directed more at professional flower arrangers. Yet by the time one has reached the stage of creating funeral and wedding flowers, let alone distributing them in packaging, one surely does not need a step-by-step instruction book.I found the arrangements presented in the book to be old-fashioned and boring.

Excellent reference! Covers everything you need to know to create many styles, as well as principles of design. Lots of images, thorough coverage of flower prep and care. This is the best flower arranging book I have come across.

Ann Marie Brown made her first solo trip to Yosemite at age 22. Like many first-time visitors, she was immediately inspired by the Valley's sheer granite walls and shimmering waterfalls. Parking her car at the first trailhead she saw, she set off on the Four-Mile Trail. A beautiful well laid out book. It tells you a lot about Yosemite, but less about Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Seeing I bought this book for Sequoia, it was not a worthwhile buy for me. I also wish that the book were larger and less cramped. But it is a good book and worthwhile as an introduction. You should buy some Sequoia maps from Amazon, which enhance the book a lot.

Best resource! We used this book to find our lodging, hikes (their ratings!), restaurants, etc. I found it so useful I purchased the Yellowstone book for next year.

If youâ€™re dealing with shingles you definitely want to read this book.The author did her own original research so itâ€™s full of information you wonâ€™t find anywhere else. She combines Chinese medicine (she's an acupuncturist) along with her personal experiences helping her mother fight her own severe attack of shingles. Hits the mark.

I tend to not give 5 stars just because that's a perfect score. This book may not be perfect but it really is very useful. I'm an acupuncturist and glad to have all this info. I'll also recommend it to my patients. The author became an expert in the treatment of shingles when her mother suffered terribly from it. She has tried several products for internal and external use in treating shingles and relieving some of the very unpleasant symptoms and lists them in the book. I definitely recommend the book to those with the disease or those who treat it. I hope the author writes more books on treating particular conditions naturally.

Again Ms. Bleecker has written a concise but complete guide to an ailment that affects a surprisingly large number of people. I relate! Recently my own mother suffered from shingles. Though it was relatively mild, it was obviously painful and embarrassing! Traditional medicine seemed to only go so far. This book puts the power back in the hands of the patient and those tasked with their care. Ms. Bleecker's tenderness toward her own mother is evident, and it clearly is the "back story" to this book.

I would recommend this book for anyone suffering from shingles, especially post peripetic pain. Only place I have found suggestions for pain relief and specific examples of what to try and how the herbs, etc work.

As with all of her books, trust Deborah to compile the relevant information and put it together in informative and easy to read, comprehensive format. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Great reference book for when you just can't figure out why your faces aren't looking right. Good purchase for me.

More of a photo book than an actual guide to draw faces easier/better... i think their are like 5 pages of actual helpful pictures with text out of the whole book. And its not eactly thick, but still, thats why it should be filled to the brim with face info.

The book came in a bad condition for a new book. Bent edges, some slight black smudges on the cover and it doesnâ€™t look new at all judging by its cover, BUTâ€¦the content is very good, â€œmoreover, itâ€™s small and lightweight! A very gorgeous shortcut to learn the basics of portrait drawing.

Bought this for my 11 year old daughter after following the amazing art from @miss_led1 on instagram. The book has helped her take her portrait drawing to the next level and we are so happy this is helping her achieve her potential purpose! Cheers, great work and thank you!

Everything was great except a stain on the cover. A helpful, handy book for reminding yourself about basic anatomy without going through the whole anatomy book but not recommended for beginner.

"Portrait Drawing" provides tips on how to draw simple portraits of people using pencils. The author briefly described the basics of using a pencil to draw (like how to hold the pencil and the types of marks you can make). Then she showed how to draw a general face/head oval and place guidelines on it to help put the facial features in the correct spots. She then focused on drawing each facial feature at various angles and included male/female and age differences. She also provided sketches and some tips for creating expressions, skin tones, and different types of hair.The book was mainly illustrations showing how to block in the face and features from various viewing angles plus a number of the author's finished portraits. Overall, I'd recommend this book to artists who like examples and tips on creating portraits at unusual angles, as that seemed to be the strong point of this book.I received a free ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Alternatively, one might be tempted to tell stories of miracle cures, those one-in-a-million recoveries that are meant to be uplifting but are ultimately mocking in their rarity.Author John Irvine is having none of that. â€œThis is no sob story,â€ he says, right from the get-go. This is a tale told with simple eloquence, of life. Love. Laughter. And that peculiar Kiwi stoicism that rejects self-pity in favour of friendship and connection. It doesnâ€™t lead me to believe Iâ€™m going to find anything other than trauma and pain inside. The back coverâ€™s better, though Iâ€™m not sure I quite believe the claims of â€˜redemption and hopeâ€™. They sound like blurb hyperbole. I set aside a morning to read it, expecting to have to break off regularly to go and stand in the sun and look at flowers or something to wrench myself out of the harrowing account I expect to find between its pages.And then I read it, and itâ€™s short, only 56 pages, I get through it in, I donâ€™t know, half an hour or so? I really have no idea. More to the point, I never stop reading; I never go and have a coffee or do some other activity that will keep me away from the text. There are many reasons for this, and one of them is the sheer joy of how the book looks, once you get away from the depressing cover art. The inside pages are a mass of colour, of joyful photos, of stunning graphic design. This is one hell of a slick publication, quite apart from Johnâ€™s writing. The publisher has done him proud and produced a thing of beauty.As for the writing itself â€“ itâ€™s everything I would hope from the pen of John Irvine: wry, witty, warm, happy, sad, poignant. As for the promised â€˜hope and redemptionâ€™ â€“ well yes, though these are not the words I would have used, as they suggest something a bit wishy-washy and sentimental, or worse still, â€˜inspirationalâ€™. Iâ€™d have thrown the book across the room if it had been â€˜inspirationalâ€™ (metaphorically â€“ Iâ€™m reading it on a pc, so the practicalities might have stopped me).I should also mention that itâ€™s also a cracking good read. Itâ€™s about comradeship, about the way people touch each otherâ€™s lives in unexpected ways. Itâ€™s about the way the most dreaded of circumstances can lead you to places that you couldnâ€™t have foreseen, and can show you precisely what it means to be human â€“ and that is the heart of it; that is why this is an important book.
