PreSchool-Grade 1 A slight episode about a navy-blue cat, new white shoes, and maintaining a positive outlook. Pete the Cat strolls down the street singing, I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes, I love my white shoes. Then he steps in (actually climbs up) a huge hill of strawberries that turn his pristine sneakers red. Did Pete cry? Goodness, no! He kept walking along and singing his song. I love my red shoes.... He proceeds to step in a mound of blueberries and then a mud puddle, each incident changing his sneakers to a new hue (the colors never blend). Unsmiling but placid, Pete takes it all in stride. After stepping into a bucket more like a tub of water, he notices that his sneakers are not only white again, but also wet. Even though they are back to their original color, the next illustration perplexingly shows Pete walking along with each shoe sporting one of the four colors highlighted in the book. Bright, childlike illustrations show the long-limbed feline regularly altering his footwear but continuing not to watch where he's walking. The moral of the story keep going no matter what happens to you in life may sound like good advice, but it doesn't instill any sense of power in children it just tells them to accept their fate. The downloadable song might help spark interest, but there's not much here to get excited about. Maryann H. Love the book; my kids are totally into Pete. Suggested for the nice story and interesting style.
My autistic 5 year old LOVES these Pete the Cat books! They're simple enough for him to memorize, with small enough words to practice his actual reading skills and are fun to sing/recite! The pictures are simple but bright and vivid and the quality of the book itself is very high. We love to read along with the YouTube kids video that has the songs. On top of everything, the moral of the stories is really great regardless of your age! I quoted Pete the Cat in a meeting at work!! No books have interested my son in reading the way Pete the Cat books have. Our favorites are this one and the 4 Groovy Buttons. I HIGHLY recommend these books for all kids!NOTE: The first book arrived with the jacket completely ripped and folded, but Amazon replaced it for me right away!
Pete the Cat is beloved by children nationwide for a reason. As a former children’s librarian, I read a lot of books to huge crowds of kids, and this is one of my favorites. It’s great that you can go online and hear the song for free whenever you want if you don’t know the tune or want a refresher. The art is a little funky, but kids really like it from my experience. It doesn’t show the reality of mixing colors (sorry art teachers), but it does teach colors and how to just roll with the punches. Pete is a coooool cat who doesn’t let a little mud or strawberry juice ruin his day. I read this to my two year old who absolutely loves it, one of the few books that gets a “More!†every time. It works for older kids too though, one of those books you can read with a toddler and their older sibling without one of them being unhappy. Have the older one sing along, and ask the little one color questions! I recommend Four Groovy Buttons as well with Pete!
I am an art teacher and look for books to incorporate into my lessons. My students LOVE Pete the Cat books and after reading it to the class we make an art project based on the book. I plan to buy more Pete the Cat books. It was funny how he stepped into different things, stained his new shoes but had a good attitude about it and saw the positive side of each situation. Highly recommend.
We have fallen in love with Pete The Cat! We sing this song all day long. Patiently awaiting the arrival of more of his stories and songs. Great help with a little one who doesn't like to talk as well. My daughter in law says the speech pathologist uses these books and songs in her special needs classroom. We use the should he cry about it - goodness no! Part now in our house all the time.
I am a preschool teacher and I love Pete the Cat, so I always make sure my kids love him too, which is not a hard task at all. Who doesn't love Pete? He's always in a good mood, and he just keeps walking along, because it's all good! This is a great book to focus on colors for young kids. I download the free songs on the website and play those when I read the books, because the music makes it that much more fun to sing along to. We're always rocking out to Pete the Cat in my room!
I LOVE this book and so does my grandson! He is not yet three but has the book memorized. (I gave it to him when he was not yet 2.) He has enjoyed it from the first day we read it to him. I suggest googling the title on YouTube and watch the author and the artist "perform" the story together for a group of toddlers. The author sings the song so well!! It is very catchy!I have given the book as gifts to new parents several times and also as birthday gifts to toddlers. (I did NOT give the book to a little girl I loved who was dying from cancer since the moral of the story (seen in the last two pages) is: So just walk along and sing your song because... it's all good!I couldn't imagine anyone reading that to her as she was in great pain. In her case,,,it was not all good. But the moral work well with the story and is encouraging for young and old in most cases.
I've read this book every night for the last 3 months to our toddler, who is just shy of 2 years. Every time Pete steps in something, he shouts "Oh No!". Pete seems to be a pretty cool cat who doesn't get rattled by the minor annoyances of life. Like when you are walking along, singing your song, and accidentally step in a large pile of blueberries.My one complaint is that Pete doesn't seem to question why there would be a large pile of blueberries or strawberries in the spots where he normally walks. I can understand being layed back, but I think maybe Pete could be a bit more proactive in protecting his stuff. And the strawberry and blueberry people. Growing berries must take some investment of both time and money and to have some 4 legged stompalot carelessly smash them must be frustrating.Alas, its all good.
My 2.5 year old son loves the Pete the Cat books. Wish they had a board book option, but hardcover helps. His teachers at daycare read these books to their class, so he came home asking for these books at home. Has not stopped reading them since (demands to have me leave one in his crib when I put him to bed, so he can try to read to himself). Check out the YouTube videos for the songs -- so cute, he sings them all the time.
